About the game

Batak is one of Turkey's favourite card games, a trick-taking game in the same family as Spades and Whist, and here you can play it instantly in your browser with no app and no sign-up, on a phone held upright or sideways, on a tablet or on a computer. It uses a standard 52-card deck and the ace is high. There are four modes. In Bidding Batak each of four players gets 13 cards and bids between 4 and 13; the highest bidder names the trump suit and leads the first trick. In Partners Batak the player opposite you is your partner and you make the bid as a team. In Spades Trump there is no bidding, spades are always trump and everyone scores the tricks they take. Kitty Batak is for three players: everyone gets 16 cards and 4 stay face down in the middle; the bid winner picks up the kitty, buries four cards and names trump. The rules follow the most common Turkish table: you must follow suit, if you cannot follow you must play a trump, if you can beat the highest card on the table you must (overtaking), and trump cannot be led until it has been broken. Overtaking and trump breaking can be switched on or off in the menu. Scoring: a bidder who makes the contract scores the tricks taken, a bidder who falls short loses the amount of the bid, and everyone else scores their tricks. A match lasts 11 hands, or 5 in quick mode, and the highest total wins. Playable cards glow and the rest are dimmed; tap a card you cannot play and the game tells you why. The bidding panel shows an estimate of your hand's strength and the trump picker suggests a suit, so you learn Batak while you play. In the career every match you win takes you up a level and the bots get sharper: they value their hands before bidding, count played cards, draw trumps and signal to their partner. Lose and you can watch an ad to retry the same level. The score sheet lists every hand, and your match is saved so you can continue later. Online Batak is here too: press Online to invite friends with a room code or link, or get matched with players from around the world; bots fill empty seats and each turn has a 25 second clock. There is no chat, only quick reactions.

How to play

  1. Pick a mode (Bidding, Spades Trump, Partners, Kitty) and set the rules; press Play for the bot career or Online to play with friends.
  2. When it is your turn to bid, choose a number or Pass. The highest bidder names trump (in Spades Trump, spades are always trump).
  3. On your turn tap one of the glowing cards: follow suit, trump if you are out of the suit, and beat the table if you can.
  4. The highest trump, or else the highest card of the led suit, wins the trick. A bidder who makes it scores the tricks taken, otherwise loses the bid.
  5. After 11 hands (5 in quick mode) the highest total wins; every win levels you up and the bots get smarter.
